America is a nation of cars. Whether in rural areas where vehicles are required to reach the nearest store or large cities with five-lane highways, automobile transportation defines American culture. That is why starting a home business of automobile can be lucrative. Even during slow economic periods, repair, cleaning and customizing cars at home can mean extra income or full time without the expensive costs of opening a retail base.

  1. Call your City Clerk to determine whether or not the local zoning regulations prohibit the creation of a home business of the automobile in your neighborhood. If a car or two in your home can not attract much attention, many unfamiliar cars and traffic continues to violate the law and disturb your neighbors.

  2. Decide what automotive services you provide. Will you fix cars? Clean them? Paint or customize? The type of services you may want to dictate whether your company is a good candidate to start at home, especially if the job you will require a garage or special equipment.

  3. Choose a name for your new business that is both capture the attention and easy to remember. Ideally, your business name will propose a desirable quality. "Mike's Car Detailing" may be an acceptable name, but "Custom Car Cleaning" can raise attention to the quality and thoroughness.

  4. Call the office in your town clerk and find out if you are required to obtain a vendor's license. Most communities require a vendor's license or business before opening.

  5. Visit the Secretary of State Office of your state and download an application to file a "fictitious name registration" which is necessary for any business does not work under your own name. A filing fee may be small charged.

  6. Gather supplies, tools and equipment you'll need to run your business. repair companies obviously need the tools, while retailer or companies need to customize products or stock of cleaning products for installation (tinted windows, neon lights, radios, security alarms, etc.)

  9. Post a sign on display or outside your home so that customers can easily find you.

  10. Regularly post ads on free Web sites such as Craigslist, and the service USFreeAds Oodle Walmart. Consider advertising in your local newspaper or shopping guide.
